SingJazz Club: An opening night to remember

There were several interesting articles in the straights times this Saturday. One dealing with how our brain spins our memory, based on the information we receive at the time we are triggered to remember something. Another wrote about how the perception of beauty, of women "of course", is different around the world.

I was actually thinking of that last article when I went through the pictures for this blog. The official opening of SingJazz, was setup around the Vox sessions that have been running on Thursdays ever since the soft opening.

Three of Singapore’s finest vocalists, all women "of course", were singing in three different sets accompanied by three different bands, all together too many names to name, but I am sure you will recognize them when you see the photo’s (at least that is what the other article claimed)

Going back to my thoughts on the beauty article. What was suggested was that the perception of beauty was different based on what country we live in, and the evidence was given by different Photoshop specialist that gave their interpretation by beautifying a picture of an already attractive Caucasian.

This relates to SingJazz how, well one thought that came up in my mind after going through my photo’s is that the global beauty standard, should not be measured on a Caucasian base.  When I go through my pictures of an ethnically diverse bunch like Maya Nova, Melissa Tham and Alemay Fernandez,

I see there is so much more to observe than what I saw in those “beautified” mug-shots in the news paper (with the US version definitely the most scary one, I have to say).

The fun part of this observation is, when you look at these three beautiful individuals and start comparing their body language to their looks. Alemay’s warmth of heart and voice and  at times grand gestures  seem directly related to her smile and strong profile,

Maya’s control of facial expressions, voice and hand movements appear to me like one cannot be without the other,

and Melissa’s photogenic features seem to help her role the versus of her lips without effort.

When I get home I always hope to see that I have captured these personalities.
To me this is what makes taking these photos fun, but it is also what makes the difference for a live music act.

Sure music can be enjoyed in the comfort of your home, without the noises that come with a lively club environment, but seeing is believing.

Not sticking to the women alone, because beauty can be found anywhere, I think on Thursday evening, with Melissa and Hiro, I found the most photogenic individuals of the Singapore Jazz scene, on stage together.

When Hiro plays his bass it is as if it is a person and that person is the love of his life, gracefully and sensually.

No need to say it was awesome that opening night at SingJazz and the bands drew standing ovations.

The first newspaper article I was referring to, claimed that people could be triggered into thinking they actually experienced something, by just seeing a picture related to the event.

I would like to point out that I had to be present to take the pictures and while I go though them now, to select them for the blog, I can only tell you that the best way to enjoy music is live... at SingJazz Club or any other venue where they support great live music.
