Lower Delta String Band: connecting rivers

For a while carefully hidden near where Raffles turns his back to the Singapore River, the Timbre group created the Barber Shop, an attractively decorated music bar/restaurant. It was for a visit to that local that I received a personal invitation to come and listen to The Lower DeltaString Band, a trio formed by guitarist Rick Smith

Accompanied by

Kailin Yong on fiddle

Victor Chen on mandolin and guitar

Including all three band members on vocals

No doubt the band name has reference to the Singapore road that ends where it’s proud river is no more of a canal, the reference must also be to the mighty Mississippi and its connection to music styles performed by the band like Blues and Bluegrass. Blues I knew is definitely a music style I appreciate.

What I am not too familiar with is Bluegrass and Blues played by a formation with two acoustic guitars and a violin.

Listening to that kind of music I found relaxing and great fun. It definitely deserves more attention than the hand full of people that was there that evening. I would call it a great way to ease into the weekend.

Enjoying a couple of beers and listening to some good-humored guys taking turns in singing some of their favorite tunes and bringing life into what seems to become dying music styles? Refreshing!
